Steelcase Leap V2 Chair

The cushion-seat alternative to the Aeron at a similar tier. LiveBack technology adapts to your spine through the day, and the live-back lumbar is forgiving for users who fall between standard chair sizes. $1,099 new, $400-$600 refurbished.

Quick Answer

Is the Steelcase Leap V2 Chair worth buying in 2026?

It offers unmatched adjustability, particularly with its 4-way armrests and a flexible backrest that moves with your body. While the firm seat and aggressive lumbar might require a physical adjustment period, its decade-plus durability makes it a phenomenal investment.

+Pros

  • Unmatched 4-way armrest adjustability for height, width, depth, and pivot
  • Flexible backrest and seat pan that actively move and bend with your body
  • Exceptional build quality and longevity that easily lasts over a decade
  • Seat depth adjustment perfectly accommodates different leg lengths
  • Flat, flexible seat pan allows users to comfortably sit cross-legged

Cons

  • The optional headrest is universally despised for feeling cheap and poorly positioned
  • Recline mechanism has friction and does not allow for smooth, continuous rocking
  • The standard lumbar insert is overly aggressive and often needs to be manually removed
  • The thin, firm seat pad can cause soreness during the initial multi-week adjustment period
  • The chair makes noticeable creaking noises due to the high volume of moving parts

After 6+ Months

Used a refurbished Leap V2 ($475 from CrandallOfficeFurniture) for 3 years before upgrading to an Aeron. The Leap is a more forgiving chair — the cushioned seat is genuinely better for users with hip issues, and the LiveBack adapts to slouching positions without the lumbar punch you get from the Aeron.

Why this chair

The Leap V2 is the chair I recommend to users who don't like mesh. Foam seat, flexible back panel, lumbar adjustment that's intuitive on day one. Where the Aeron requires a setup ritual, the Leap mostly works out of the box.

The refurb hack

A new Leap V2 is $1,099+. Refurbished from a vetted reseller (CrandallOfficeFurniture, Beverly Hills Chairs) is $400-$600 with the same 12-year warranty. The chair was designed for 12+ year office leases — refurbs from 2015-2018 are mechanically indistinguishable from new.
